Ein weites Feld Dieser Blog ist das Tagebuch eines fiktiven Sportlers, Claude D. Uchek. Sein Sport ist das Ballspiel, ein Spiel, daß dem Baseball nachempfunden ist. Es ist der Nationalsport, mehr noch, der kulturelle Kompass des Landes New America. Dieses fiktive Land ist eine ins winzige geschrumpfte USA. Grobes geographisches Vorbild ist die Insel Jamaica. Dorthin sind die amerikanischen Revolutionäre deportiert worden, nachdem ihre Revolte gegen Großbritanien gescheitert ist. Uchek's Tagebuch beginnt im März 1890. Er ist zwanzig Jahre alt und versucht sich als Berufs-Ballspieler in der unteren Liga und strebt nach oben. Die sportliche Karriere von Uchek liegt nicht in den Händen des Autors, sondern wird durch das kommerzielle Baseball Simulationsprogramm OUT OF THE PARK 11 (OOTP 11). Das Leben des Helden illustriert die Gesellschaft, die Geschichte und das Alltagsleben in New America, dem Hongkong des 19ten Jahrhunderts auf dem amerikanischen Kontinents.
